LA City Councilmembers introduce motion to study democracy vouchers

Exciting news out of LA City Council last week: On Friday, Councilmember Nithya Raman, Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martinez, and Councilmember Marqueece Harris-Dawson co-introduced a motion to study the feasibility of establishing a democracy vouchers program in Los Angeles City.

We're grateful for Councilmember Raman's leadership spearheading this motion—and Councilmember Soto-Martinez and Councilmember Harris-Dawson for stepping up as co-presenters. And special thanks to Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez, Councilmember Traci Park, and Councilmember Katy Young Yaroslavsky for seconding the motion.

This is a big move towards empowering more Angelenos to participate in our democracy, and just the first official step of a longer process in City Hall where the Council considers exploring what a democracy vouchers program could look like for Los Angeles City.

While we wait to hear when the motion is scheduled in committee(s), we want to give a shout out to all of our partners and supporters for their work getting the word out about democracy vouchers over the past few years—especially those who turned out to give public comment on Friday. Once the motion is scheduled to be heard, we will circulate a sign-on letter for individuals and organizations who want to join us for public comment in committee and show their support for expanding our campaign finance system to include all Angelenos.

More to come soon!

Onward,

Los Angeles for Democracy Vouchers Team
